Fergusson, Singh and Stirling put the Borders to the sword.
In the final game of this year’s National Under 17s Selection Trials at Murrayfield last night Glasgow Under 17s beat their Borders counterparts 68 – 0, making an impressive three out of three victories having already seen off the Caledonia and Edinburgh teams in their previous matches.
Ayr players Robbie Fergusson and Burns Singh started at outside centre and wing respectively before Robbie moved to his more favoured position of full back. They both put in great performances and each scored two tries in a classy display of open, running rugby. James Stirling came on in the second half and showed again a good turn of pace and wily footwork skills as he gained more valuable game time.
Glasgow Under 17s Head Coach, Peter Laverie said, “ There’s been a lot of good rugby on show in the Under 17 games this year but I have to praise the efforts of the whole Glasgow squad who have worked hard at training and really bought in to improving themselves as players and playing for each other. I think you could see the commitment to a fluid style of 15 man rugby, trying to keep the ball alive and scoring tries, which is what we all want to see in our game. I think a good number of our squad have put their hands up for national selection this year so we’ll see what transpires. I feel sorry for two of our squad; Murray Cubie and Jamie Graham who have missed the last games through injury, they are fine players and will do well in the future I’m sure.”
When asked to comment on the Ayr players he said, “ I’m pleased for James Stirling, he has made a successful injury comeback and played his part in the success of the team. Burns Singh switched from wing forward last season to winger this season and has been a revelation, he brings a robustness to the wing and he certainly has pace and is a good organiser in defence …and he scores tries! Robbie Fergusson played at outside centre and also in his usual position of full-back, he showed some really good running lines and his try in the second half was top-drawer, timing his entry into the line and changing his angle of run perfectly before burning the opposition all the way to the try line. Yes it was good stuff to watch.”
The Glasgow team have shown a lot of creativity and flair in all three games and displayed a real desire to work and play well.
Scotland Under 17s take part in the Millfield Festival in England during the Easter break.
