WELCOME TO AYR RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB
ARFC Rugby Academy

As Ayr strives to become one of the strongest rugby clubs in Scotland it is important that we are producing talented players of the highest quality who understand both the on-field and off-field requirements and preparation in order to be a top rugby player.

Aim:
To increase the depth of quality rugby players at Ayr Rugby Club by improving the holistic rugby ability of selected players.

Method:
Each season approximately 20 players will be selected to take part in the academy. The players will be selected by the respective team coaches and the academy director. Being a member of the academy one season does not guarantee you a place for the following season. Certain standards will need to be met, these include attitude, discipline and attendance.

The academy will meet 2 times per month (eg. 2 Monday nights from 7 - 8.30pm per month) during the season. An off-season program will also be provided. As the aim of the academy is to produce holistically better rugby players not every session will be an actual physical coaching session. The academy sessions will cover the following on-field and off-field aspects of being an elite rugby player;

  • Fitness (aerobic and anaerobic).
  • Strength
  • Nutrition and hydration.
  • Awareness of drugs, alcohol and steroids.
  • Life as a professional rugby player.
  • Mental preparation and goal setting.
  • General ball skills and body position.
  • Individual positional coaching.
  • Video analysis
  • Understanding and awareness of all rugby rules (reduce the penalty count).

Expert guest speakers will be brought in to talk to the players about many of the above aspects.

Academy outcomes:

Academy members will be:

  • Fitter
  • Stronger
  • Technically correct in terms of positional and general play.
  • High level of ball skills.
  • Know how to prepare mentally for a match.
  • Understand the importance of pre and post match nutrition and hydration.
  • Understand the rules of rugby.
